If you’re a psychologist practising in Victoria, professional indemnity insurance is not optional — it’s a requirement of AHPRA registration. But finding the right cover, understanding what’s included, and knowing what to do when something goes wrong can all feel overwhelming.

The good news? As a Victorian Psychologists Association (VPA) member, you already have it sorted.

Here’s everything you need to know about your professional indemnity insurance as a VPA member — including what’s covered, how to access your certificate, and what to do if you receive an AHPRA notification.

Am I automatically covered as a VPA member?

Yes — as a VPA member (through MSAV), professional indemnity insurance is included in your membership. There’s nothing extra to sign up for or pay. Your cover is active from the moment you join.

You can find full details about your policy in the MSAV member portal.

What does professional indemnity insurance cover for psychologists?

Your VPA policy is comprehensive and AHPRA-compliant. Cover includes:

  • $20,000,000 in public liability cover
  • Errors and omissions cover
  • Malpractice (professional indemnity) cover
  • Telehealth services
  • Private practice work (where private income is under $125,000 per year)
  • Unlimited retroactive cover (excluding known claims)
  • 7 years of run-off cover
  • Vicarious liability cover
  • Therapy dogs

The policy meets all AHPRA requirements for psychologist registration in Australia. It is a group insurance policy held by the Health Services Union Victoria No. 4 Branch with TEGO Insurance Pty Ltd (Policy No. EMMI-8346-0325). You can download a copy of the policy from the MSAV website.

Note: you must maintain your union membership to maintain your insurance cover.

Does my insurance cover private practice work?

Yes. Your VPA membership cover extends to private practice, not just employed work. The key condition is that your private practice income must be under $125,000 annually.

If your private income exceeds this threshold, you’ll need to arrange separate cover for the additional amount. Contact MSAV if you’re unsure whether this applies to you.

What if I’m switching from another insurance provider?

It’s natural to worry about gaps in cover when you change providers. With VPA’s policy, you’re protected by unlimited retroactive cover (excluding any known claims). This means if a complaint arises from work you did before joining VPA — and you weren’t already aware of the issue — you’re still covered.

You also get 7 years of run-off cover. This protects you after you retire or if you no longer hold AHPRA registration — so you’re not left exposed for past work once you stop practising.

I’ve received an AHPRA notification. What should I do?

Receiving an AHPRA notification can be stressful. As a VPA member, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Here’s what happens when you reach out to us:

  • We immediately notify our insurers on your behalf
  • A lawyer contacts you to provide support
  • They can apply for an extension if you need more time to respond
  • They support you through preparing your response to the application

Contact MSAV as soon as possible after receiving a notification so we can act quickly on your behalf.

Is there someone I can call for initial advice?

Yes. Your policy includes access to a medico-legal helpline. When you call, let them know you’re a VPA member and have your member number ready.

The helpline can help with questions like:

  • Subpoenas — do you need to provide your files? Can you request an extension?
  • Responding to requests from lawyers
  • Understanding what to expect when appearing in court
  • Engaging in legal processes generally

It’s a valuable resource that many members don’t realise they have.

How do I get a certificate of insurance?

Your certificate of currency is available directly through the MSAV member portal. Log in at www.msav.org.au and access it from your account dashboard.

You can download and share this letter whenever you need to confirm your insurance — for example, when contracting with a new employer or service.

Not a VPA member yet?

If you’re a psychologist in Victoria and you’re currently paying separately for professional indemnity insurance, joining the VPA through MSAV could save you money — because your cover is included in your union membership.

Beyond insurance, VPA membership gives you access to:

  • Workplace advocacy and enterprise agreement support
  • Legal assistance for workplace matters
  • OHS representation
  • A community of Victorian psychologists working toward better conditions
