Medical Scientists were treated to a full day of Ocular microbiology on Saturday 3rd August at the Peter Doherty Institute.

The event was an AIMS/ASM joint workshop and a crowd of nearly 100 lined up to hear expert Scientists and Doctors present case studies and in-depth discussions about the role of microbiology in ophthalmology.

MSAV were one of the sponsors on the day, and the MSAV banner was proudly displayed at the front of the auditorium during the workshop.

I was thrilled to attend as an MSAV Delegate and was joined by another MSAV Delegate, Sam Holmes.

We both had the opportunity to speak to attendees about the benefits of union membership, and how joining the Union makes us stronger together! Another key talking point amongst members in attendance was the upcoming public sector bargaining, and what can be added to our log of claims.

Reproductive health leave seems to be an entitlement that many members are interested to learn more about, and most definitely keen to see in our next agreement. Almost certainly, though most conversations with members turned to the wage claim that the nurses recently won and how we can achieve a similar outcome for us.

Spending time talking with our members about industrial relations is always time well spent!

It was great to see RMIT Med Lab Science students in attendance. Union membership for students is free. New MSAV Student Members Claire and Akanksha, who are doing their bursary placements at Monash Health Microbiology, signed up on the day.

Pens were a hot item from our merchandise display, however, solidarity always wins as most valuable.
